What does it mean when people say they want to “get rid of the police?” Contrary to what you might think, it’s not about sowing seeds of chaos and anarchy, it’s about reforming a system that creates crimes—and criminals—to fuel a for-profit prison industry.

As Janaya Khan, a member of Black Lives Matter and an activist with the new abolitionist movement, explained to Splinter: abolishing police isn’t about “just one bad apple—the whole damn tree is rotten.”
