Black Lives Matter activist Deray Mckesson has raised money faster than any other Baltimore mayoral candidate

Just a month after Black Lives Matter activist announced he was running for mayor of Baltimore, station WBAL reports he’s raised more money faster than any of the other candidates in the race.

Mckesson managed to raise $223,000 in the course of six weeks, “three-weeks less than anyone else used to raise [that level of] money,” the station said. On Wednesday, Mckesson announced he’d raised more than $240,000 from nearly 5,000 donors.

“We’re up against an establishment in our city that needs to have a fresh perspective on how to help change things for the better,” Mckesson said in an email to supporters.

Mckesson still trails the race’s two front-runners in cash-on-hand: former mayor Sheila Dixon, who was ousted from office in 2010 in a kickback scandal, has $476,000 available, while state senator Catherine Pugh has $371,000, WBAL reported. The Baltimore Sun reported the two were virtually tied in a poll conducted earlier this month.

Mckesson placed 10th, though he’d only been in the race for 30 days at the time the poll was taken.
