A Dallas police officer got off her shift Thursday night, walked a block home, and entered an apartment that she believed was hers. It was not. She shot and killed the man who lived there, according to police.
Mitchell said that when additional police arrived at the scene, the officer told them that she had walked into the wrong apartment, and that “at some point, she pulled her weapon and shot the victim.”
The victim was 26-year old Botham Shem Jean, NBC’s Dallas affiliate reported. Mitchell said that he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
During the press conference, Mitchell declined to comment on whether or not the officer thought the man was an intruder, and said that neither the officer nor anyone else who may have witnessed the shooting had been interviewed yet.
In a statement, Dallas PD said that they were conducting a joint investigation with the district attorney, and that the officer had been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.
We’ve reached out to the Dallas Police Department to ask what a “full shift” means and how long the officer had been living at the apartment, and will update if and when we receive a response.
