Section 9(b) of the order reads:
To better inform the public regarding the public safety threats associated with sanctuary jurisdictions, the Secretary shall utilize the Declined Detainer Outcome Report or its equivalent and, on a weekly basis, make public a comprehensive list of criminal actions committed by aliens and any jurisdiction that ignored or otherwise failed to honor any detainers with respect to such aliens.
That means the government is apparently going to start putting out a weekly document that lists every single “criminal action” allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants living in sanctuary cities–state and local jurisdictions like New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco that have policies on the books to limit their cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. So much for innocent until proven guilty.
Sanctuary cities became one of Trump’s favorite boogeymen on the campaign trail. He often told the story of Kate Steinle, who was murdered by an undocumented immigrant in San Francisco who was in a Bay Area jail–but not turned over to immigration officials–shortly before the fatal shooting. At the Republican National Convention, family members of people killed by undocumented immigrants took the stage to make an emotional case to elect Trump for his strongman immigration policies–promises he’s now acting on.
