Nice Oscar awards last night. Lots of talk about equality and women’s empowerment. The biggest and most prominent advertiser supporting the ceremony: Walmart. Hmm.

Walmart didn’t just buy some ads—it commissioned three entire short films by famous Hollywood names. All women! Nancy Meyers! Melissa McCarthy! And Dee Rees, whose ad even featured a black lesbian couple, winning praise across social media. Imagine, in a Walmart ad! These ads—the most prominent ones in the show, fawned over by Hollywood itself—were a prime reason why this year’s Oscar ads “were all about women’s empowerment.”

Walmart is America’s largest private employer. The majority of their more than two million employees are women. Walmart is the subject of the biggest gender discrimination lawsuit in the country. They employ hundreds of thousands of black and Latino people. Walmart is the biggest low wage employer in America. Walmart workers receive billions of dollars in public assistance every year because they are not paid a living wage. And lest its mostly female employees ever come together to demand a living wage, Walmart aggressively and systematically crushes any attempt by its workers to organize themselves in order to better their working conditions.
