It's Probably Fine That the Trump Family Doesn't Know How to Vote

New York State has terrible voting laws. It offers neither early voting or same-day registration. Absentee voting is needlessly complicated. The level of planning required to vote in our primaries is shameful and depresses turnout, leaving many of our very worst elected officials comfortable in their seats. As a consequence, overall voter turnout is abysmal and we have a highly dysfunctional and unaccountable government in one of the most progressive states in the country. All of this needs to change.

But it’s also probably fine that members of the Trump family can’t figure out how to vote.

Almost all of the Trumps who live in DC because they inexplicably have government jobs managed to screw up their absentee ballots, meaning that their votes were not counted in the recent November 7 election.

As The New York Daily News reported on Monday, officials with the Board of Elections said that Melania Trump failed to sign the envelope containing her ballot, so it wasn’t counted. Ivanka Trump sent her ballot on the day of the election, so it wasn’t counted. Jared Kushner never sent the absentee ballot he requested, so it wasn’t counted. The president of the United States managed to vote successfully, but was unsuccessful at remembering his own birthday: “Trump, 71, was born on June 14, 1946, but his ballot application lists his birthday as July,” according to the paper.
