Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed that at least two Mexican tourists were killed in the attack. Neither victim has been publicly identified. Mexican authorities also reported that at least six other Mexican tourists were hospitalized with injuries from the attack. Officials say the victims told them they were attacked by air while resting and having lunch in an area known as the Bahariya Oasis.
Several media reports claim the tourists were mistaken for terrorists.
Egypt’s Ministry of the Interior said that at least 12 people were killed in the attack and another 10 were injured. Egypt says the tourist convoy was on a non-authorized zone when it was attacked.
The zone in which the tourists were traveling in buses is known as a hotbed for weapons smuggling and terrorist activity.
