At Least 10 Dead in Texas High School Shooting [UPDATING]

At least ten people—mostly students—are dead after a school shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas, about 30 miles southeast of Houston. At least ten other people have been injured, according to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Friday morning that the alleged shooter, who is a male student, is in custody, along with another person of interest who is also a student. The suspect has been identified by the Associated Press and CBS News as 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis.

At least three patients—two adults and one person under 18—were at the hospital as of 11:10 a.m. ET, with more on the way, hospital officials at the University of Texas Medical Branch said in a brief news conference. The first call of “shots fired” came it at 7:32 a.m. local time, and a later 911 call reported the shots were fired in the art room, KHOU11 reported.

Law enforcement were still sweeping the area for possible improvised explosive devices.

Speaking during an event on prison reform at the White House on Friday morning, President Trump decried the “absolutely horrific attack” at the school.

“This has been going on too long in our country. Too many years, too many decades now,” Trump said. He went on to pledge to do “everything in our power to keep weapons out of the hands of people who pose a threat to themselves and others.”

Update, 12:08 PM: In a grim coincidence, Friday was the last day of the school year for students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. The official account of the March for Our Lives, which was organized in part by Stoneman Douglas students, issued a statement in support of the Santa Fe High School community, and individual Stoneman Douglas students also tweeted their support.

Update, 12:40 PM: Speaking with ABC News, one student tearfully described the attack, saying, “I just ran as fast as I could to the nearest forrest so I could hide, and I called my mom.”

Update, 12:52 PM: The Santa Fe Independent School District tweeted that explosive devices had been found in and around the high school.

Update, 2:07 PM: Law enforcement officials told CBS and the Associated Press that the shooting suspect has been identified as 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis. He is reportedly a student at Santa Fe High School.

Update, 3:21 PM: At an afternoon press conference, Gov. Abbott told reporters that the shooting suspect used two weapons—a shotgun and a pistol—both legally owned by his father. Abbott also said that police have obtained writings by the suspect which indicated he hoped to commit suicide following the attack, but that, in the event, he had told police he lacked “the courage” to do so.

Update, 3:36 PM: Texas officials have released Dimitrios Pagourtzis’ mugshot. He is reportedly being held without bond on capital murder charges.
