Everything is impossibly stupid these days, but it has still been incredibly shocking to see how central Peter Navarro’s Canada delusions have become to the second Trump administration. Trump’s top trade adviser has long been obsessed with critiquing Canada’s “self-interests” while slamming them for being out of step with “Trump world,” and now we are living in Navarro’s preferred universe where America has lost its closest ally. If you’re wondering where Trump’s bizarre obsession with making Canada the 51st state comes from, it’s from a man who was convicted for ignoring a House subpoena last year who has proven he knows less than nothing about economics and trade.
Trump has doggedly pursued the full-scale collapse of the entire North American economy in his first several weeks in office, and Justin Trudeau alleged that the president’s plan is to crash the Canadian economy so the U.S. can annex the country. A new poll commissioned by the Canadian non-profit foundation, the Angus Reid Institute (rated right of center with high factual reporting by Media Bias/Fact Check), found that there is stunningly little support in the United States for what has become the core policy of the Trump administration outside their desire to destroy the federal government. Even the MAGA cult isn’t automatically jumping on board with this cockamamie idea.
According to this poll, just six percent of Americans believe the “U.S. should annex Canada using political and economic pressure,” while only two percent are on board with annexing Canada “using military force.” Sixty percent of Americans have “no interest in seeing Canada join the U.S.” while thirty-two percent are “interested but only if Canadians want to.”
This poll found that just one in ten Canadians and only one in five Canadian conservatives would vote yes to joining the United States, which means that per the terms of the current situation, Trump can’t even get ten percent of Americans to agree to this childish pursuit. To put in perspective how shockingly isolated Trump has made himself with this Canada nonsense, a higher percentage of Democrats approved of him his first year as president (ten percent) than Americans who want to annex Canada right now. Even at their all-time lowest approval rating, Congress got higher marks from Americans than this idiotic 51st state bullshit. It would not be inaccurate to state that Trump’s primary policy of crashing the economy to try to annex Canada is quite possibly the least popular thing going in America right now.
