Police arrest and ID man who allegedly made death threats against black Mizzou students

Authorities have apprehended the man allegedly responsible for posting death threats on anonymous discussion-based social media app Yik Yak targeting black University of Missouri students.

Police arrested 19-year-old Hunter Park at his residence hall at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo., at approximately 1:50 a.m.

Park, who is white, is currently being held on a $4,500 bond at Boone County Jail in Columbia, although The Daily Beast reports that a judge amended his bail to keep him detained without bond. According to The Associated Press, Park has been booked on a preliminary charge of suspicion of making a terrorist threat.

One of the racist threats found on Yik Yak promised to “stand my ground and shoot every black person I see.” Another said, “Don’t go to campus tomorrow. These messages violate Missouri law, which prohibits communication of a life-endangering threat to at least 10 people, Reuters reports.

The Yik Yak messages are believed to have been posted in response to student-led protests against institutionalized racism at the University of Missouri and the administration’s failure to change campus culture. The protests and walk-outs by faculty led to the resignation of University of Missouri system president Tim Wolfe and Columbia campus chancellor R. Bowen Loftin on Monday.
