So the reason? In a true example of why we can’t have nice things, it’s all due to corporate sponsorship. Coca-Cola is one of the corporate sponsors of the Olympics, and Coca-Cola is not providing any coffee in the Olympic Village.
Egyptian archer Ahmed El-Nemr told NPR that he has “some complains about coffee.” He said he asked, and was told they are limited to Coca-Cola products in the village apartment buildings or at the sports venues.
It’s unclear why Coca-Cola didn’t offer their own coffee line, Gold Peak coffee, in the Olympic Village.
Before you despair too much for the athletes, a search on Google Maps shows there are Starbucks in Rio. And, of course, there are no shortage of local coffee shops for the real thing.
