This history of high heels video is 'Schoolhouse Rock!' by way of Studio 54
Ever wish you could’ve seen the “I’m just a bill…” bill waiting in the line for the bathroom while Liza Minnelli and Bianca Jagger hush their giggles in a neighboring stall? Well, have I got the sensory-equivalent video for you.
Presenting musician and performance artist Dorian Electra’s music video for “The Dark History of High Heels,” spotted over on Autostraddle. The clip presents a twisted, Schoolhouse Rock! After Dark-like take on the history of high heels, tracing the elevated footwear’s origins in the ninth-century Persian militia to the 17th-century courts of Louis XIV’s Versailles to 20th-century pin-up pornography to their increasingly non-gendered present. It’s interesting to see how heels went from a celebrated staple in any male aristocrat’s wardrobe to a reviled symbol of feminine irrationality and excess. Also, the video’s rull pretty to watch.
