Trans performer Alexis Arquette dies at 47

Trans performer Alexis Arquette died on Sunday, brother Richmond Arquette has confirmed. Arquette was 47.

The cause of death is not yet known. According to Richmond Arquette, Arquette was surrounded by friends and family.

“Our brother Robert, who became our brother Alexis, who became our sister Alexis, who became our brother Alexis, passed this morning September 11, at 12:32 am,” Richmond, 53, wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday morning, according to Us Weekly. “He was surrounded by all of his brothers and sisters, one of his nieces and several other loved ones. We were playing music for him and he passed during David Bowie’s Starman. As per his wishes, we cheered at the moment that he transitioned to another dimension.”

Arquette, who was born Robert Arquette before transitioning, was the sibling of actors Patricia Arquette, David Arquette, Rosanna Arquette and Richmond Arquette. Arquett’s most famous role was as a gender neutral singer inspired by Boy George in 1998’s The Wedding Singer.

In 2007, the documentary Alexis Arquette: She’s My Brother about Arquette’s transition premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Earlier this year, Arquette’s brother, David, said Arquette no longer identified as transgender, but as “gender suspicious.”
