Baltimore police just shot a 13-year-old boy with a fake gun

A Baltimore police officer shot a 13-year-old boy Wednesday afternoon after seeing him with a replica gun, local station WBAL TV reports.

Two officers, Baltimore police commissioner Kevin Davis told media this afternoon, saw the boy holding what they thought was a gun on the street near a recreation center and basketball courts, and chased after him. One of the officers, Davis said, shot the boy after he tried to run away from them. The commissioner said his injuries are not life-threatening.

Davis also said the boy’s mother was being questioned and that “she knew” he had left the house with the replica gun, the Baltimore Sun reports, adding that he thought there was “no reason to believe that these officers acted inappropriately in any way.”

The shooting happened as marches in another part of the city were taking place to commemorate the one year anniversary of the funeral for Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old black man who died in police custody last year.

Earlier this week, the family of 12-year-old Tamir Rice reached a $6 million settlement with the city of Cleveland after a police officer shot and killed Rice while he was playing with a toy pellet gun.
