Charities Ditch Mar-a-Lago and Its Racist Owner

After eight months in office, President Trump’s casual racism is finally costing him business. More than half a dozen charities (that were able to overlook Trump’s brazenly racist campaign) have announced they will no longer host fundraisers at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, FL.

On Thursday, The Washington Post reported that The American Cancer Society, the Cleveland Clinic, and The American Friends of Magen David Adom (a charity which supports an Israeli counterpart to the American Red Cross), would no longer host their annual fundraising galas at Mar-a-Lago.

Succumbing to nothing but mounting peer pressure, three more nonprofits announced that they would no longer host galas at Mar-a-Lago on Friday. Susan G. Koman, the Salvation Army, and the American Red Cross said they would relocate their annual fundraisers, according to the New York Times.

The Palm Beach Zoo and Conservation Society and the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach have also ditched their previously planned events at Mar-a-Lago.

Hosting fundraisers is one of Mar-a-Lago’s primary sources of income: renting the ballroom costs charities between $100,000 and $275,000 depending on the event’s size. As the Associated Press noted, Trump’s “Winter White House” hosted 21 events between November and April last year.

Trump’s DC hotel doesn’t seem to be suffering due to its namesake’s bigotry. Despite anticipating a loss of $2.1 million during its first months of operation, the Trump Organization reported a $1.97 million in earnings since opening in October.

Farewell to Mar-a-Lago’s once buzzing social calendar, we’re all so devastated. But let’s be honest, charities who host events at a Trump property after his “both sides” comments about Charlottesville, VA, probably won’t be doing much fundraising.
