Charlottesville Mayor Tells Richard Spencer and His Idiot Friends to Get Lost

Mayor Mike Signer made it clear that white supremacist Richard Spencer and his torch–carrying moronic friends are not welcome in Charlottesville, VA.

Signer issued the statement after a group of white nationalists held a nighttime rally reminiscent of the KKK around a Confederate statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee at a Charlottesville park on Saturday night.

According to The Daily Progress, Spencer was joined by right-wing blogger and “America First” president Jason Kessler and several others in protest against the city’s attempts to remove and sell the statue.

The torches, which Kessler said were supposed to symbolize Viking funeral processions, were extinguished after about 10 minutes when police arrived to disperse the crowd. But before the group left they sang and chanted a couple rounds of idiotic slogans like, “You will not replace us!” and “Russia is our friend!”

Russia is our friend? Ok.

Here’s what the mayor had to say, according to Daily Progress reporter Allison Wrabel:

This event involving torches at night in Lee Park was either profoundly ignorant or was designed to instill fear in our minority populations in a way that hearkens back to the days of the KKK. Either way, as mayor of this city, I want everyone to know this: we reject this intimidation. We are a welcoming city, but such intolerance is not welcome here.

Charlottesville Republican Party Chairman Erich Reimer called the protest “utterly disgusting and disturbing beyond words,” the newspaper reported.

While a court has temporarily blocked Charlottesville from selling the statue, city officials say they will move forward with plans to rename and redesign the Lee and Jackson parks in that district.

Groups that are waging a legal battle to preserve the monument say they have nothing to do with Spencer’s group.

Spencer was pretty proud of himself, though.
