Emmys Stiff Women of Color but Leave Room for Bill Maher's Bigoted Ass
The nominations for the 2017 Emmys were announced and well, there’s certainly some progress! But also, in some respects, unless you’re a fan of Westworld and SNL, things might be a little disappointing.
On the one hand, there was plenty of diversity when it came to the Outstanding Comedy Series and Lead Actor in a Comedy Series categories. Three of the seven shows nominated for Outstanding Comedy were centered around people of color—Atlanta, black-ish, and Master of None—and the respective leads of those shows made up three of the six nominations for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series: Donald Glover (who was also nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for Atlanta, Anthony Anderson, and Aziz Ansari (also nominated for Outstanding Writing). Riz Ahmed also scored multiple nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie for his role in The Night Of and for his guest spot on Girls.
Unfortunately, when it came to women, things were not so good. While Uzo Aduba (Orange Is the New Black), Thandie Newton (Westworld), and Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale) did score nominations for Supporting Actress, fan favorite Issa Rae and Insecure was snubbed, as were shows like Jane The Virgin and Ava DuVernay’s Queen Sugar. Oh, and even Oprah herself couldn’t get a nomination for The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
In fact, there was just one woman of color nominated in both Lead Actress categories.
But you know who did land a nomination? Bill Maher, who spat out a racial slur completely unprompted and has made a career getting away with racist and Islamophobic shit. So thanks, Emmys.
