Fidel Castro's Oldest Son, Fidel Castro Díaz-Balart, Has Reportedly Committed Suicide

After struggling for months with what Cuban state-run media referred to as a “deep depression” and seeking medical attention, Fidel Castro Díaz-Balart, the 68-year-old son of Fidel Castro, has reportedly committed suicide.

The website, CubaDebate, said that “Díaz-Balart […] had been attended by a group of doctors for several months due to a state of profound depression, [and] committed suicide this morning.”

As part of his treatment, he initially required a hospitalization regimen and then continued with outpatient follow-up during his social reincorporation.

During his professional activity, dedicated entirely to sciences, he obtained relevant national and international recognitions.

Díaz-Balart was the vice president of Cuba’s Academy of Sciences and was a scientific adviser to the state.
