‘In America, We Don’t Worship Government, We Worship God,’ Trump Says

President Donald Trump on Saturday continued his propensity to trample on the U.S. Constitution, this time blurring the lines between church and state during a commencement speech at the evangelical Liberty University in Virginia.

In his first commencement address as president, Trump talked a lot about God, football, and, of course, the crowd size at his speech. With no apparent sense of irony, he complained about “critics,” saying, “Nothing is easier or more pathetic than being a critic.”

He also heaped praise on Liberty University founder and televangelist huckster Jerry Falwell Sr., saying, “I used to love watching him on television.”

Trump then included a token reference to his electoral victory, claiming it was God’s will:

But his most memorable line of an otherwise forgettable speech was one in which Trump disrespected his own service in public office while catering to an evangelical base that comprises some of his biggest supporters.

“When the pilgrims led at Plymouth, they prayed,” Trump said. “When the founders wrote the Declaration of Independence, they invoked our creator four times. Because in America, we don’t worship government, we worship God.”
