John Kelly Is Trump's New Chief Of Staff, So Who Will Replace Him At Homeland Security?

In a surprise—but not too surprising—move on Friday, Donald Trump announced that Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly would be joining the White House as Chief of Staff, replacing current occupant Reince Priebus.

The announcement followed several days of public acrimony between Trump’s newly hired communications director Anthony Scaramucci and Priebus, whom Scaramucci referred to as a “fucking paranoid schizophrenic,” in an on-the-record interview with The New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza.

Kelly, a former Marine Corps general, has played a key role in the White House’s ongoing anti-immigration efforts, particularly as they pertain to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, a section of DHS.

It remains unclear who will replace Kelly as head of DHS. Whomever Trump selects could face a bruising confirmation battle, as Capitol Hill finds itself less and less willing to acquiesce to the president’s whims. They will nevertheless be handed the reigns of a massive detention and deportation enterprise, which, under the Trump White House, has helped execute the administration’s nationalist, isolationist agenda.
