Kim Davis' lawyer has been making some…interesting comments

Kentucky clerk Kim Davis is currently in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, but that doesn’t mean her legal team can’t speak on her behalf. And boy, have they been speaking.

One man in particular, Mat Staver, has been making some, well, noteworthy statements about the plight of his client.

Earlier this week, for instance, he was speaking to a radio show about Davis, and he compared her situation to that of Jews in Nazi Germany. This is what he said (thanks to Jezebel for the transcript):

What happened in Nazi Germany, what happened there first, they removed the Jews from government public employment, then they stopped patronizing them in their private businesses, then they continued to stigmatize them, then they were the ‘problems,’ then they killed them.

Less impassioned observers might note that the calls to kill Kim Davis have been notably absent from the public dialogue.

Then, on Friday, Staver likened Davis to Martin Luther King. Speaking at a press conference, he said, “She’s not going to resign, she’s not going to sacrifice her conscience, so she’s doing what Martin Luther King Jr. wrote about in his Letter from the Birmingham Jail, which is to pay the consequences for her decision.”

While this might be technically true in some sense, one suspects that Dr. King would object to being involved in this particular battle. King, remember, was sort of interested in adding civil rights protections to the law, not taking them away.

What will Stavers say next? Kim Davis as Christ? Kim Davis as Batman? Stay tuned. As of Saturday, there is no sign that Davis is going anywhere.
