Mexico's Women and Gender-Fluid Muxes Are Leading This City's Earthquake Recovery

Juchitán’s indigenous Zapotec community is known for its matriarchal traditions and third-gender “muxes”—someone who is gender-fluid or born male and may identify as a woman. Women and “muxes” have been taking charge of rebuilding.

“It will take a long time for us to recover and to see how we can help each other and lift ourselves back up,” says earthquake survivor Felina Santiago Valdivieso.
