Obama says he could have won a third term, Trump responds in the most petty way possible

In an interview that aired this week, President Obama said he was “confident” he could have won a third term, which angered Donald Trump and maybe depressed you as you contemplated a possible nuclear arms race and Medicaid block grants.

In a conversation with his former campaign strategist and White House adviser David Axelrod on his podcast “The Axe Files” (related: why), Obama said that Republicans’ intransigence over the last eight years may have succeeded in winning them control of Congress, but he believes his vision for the country would have prevailed in a hypothetical third run for the presidency:

And—and the problem is, it [cultural shifts and progressive gains made by his administration] doesn’t always manifest itself in politics, right? You know, I am confident in this vision because I’m confident that if I—if I had run again and articulated it, I think I could’ve mobilized a majority of the American people to rally behind it.
I know that in conversations that I’ve had with people around the country, even some people who disagreed with me, they would say the vision, the direction that you point towards is the right one.

In response, Trump lashed out in his id diary:

Because that tweet is a response to a hypothetical, it is not demonstrably untrue, unlike the tweets the president-elect sent later that day:

As a reminder, the Donald J. Trump Foundation is a grifter enterprise that enriched the Trump family, did virtually nothing in the way of legitimate charity, and hadn’t received a dime from its namesake since 2008.
