President Trump Offers the Weakest Possible Defense of His Son

In the wake of Donald Trump Jr.’s shocking disclosure of emails appearing to confirm longstanding allegations of direct links between his father’s presidential campaign and the Russian government’s efforts to defeat Hillary Clinton, President Trump has unveiled his administration’s official statement in defense of his eldest son:

“My son is a high-quality person and I applaud his transparency.”

That’s it. Can you feel the love?

The surprisingly brief statement, read by White House Deputy Spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders during an off-camera press briefing on Tuesday, comes amidst an unusual silence by the president, who just one day earlier leapt to the defense of his daughter Ivanka after she was criticized for her role at the G20 summit in Germany.

When pressed by reporters as to whether or not Trump Jr.’s disclosure disproved the White House’s assertion that there had been no collusion between the president’s campaign and Russian officials, Sanders reportedly insisted that no collusions had taken place, and directed all other questions on the matter to the president’s son’s privately retained legal team.
