This Summer Was a Total Wasteland for LGBTQ People in Movies

A new study released by GLAAD on Thursday showed that LGBTQ characters were basically nonexistent in the movies released by the seven major studios over the summer.

Sony’s Rough Night and Lionsgate’s Hazlo Como Hombre were the only movies out of 25 films released between June 1 and September 1 to include LGBTQ characters, the study found. That means that even blockbusters like Wonder Woman and Spider-Man: Homecoming which were praised for their inclusivity lacked LGBTQ people.

The report found that comedies like Rough Night, are more likely to include LGBTQ characters. Rough Night is a comedy film about a group of five friends who get together for a bacholerrete party, but things take a turn for the worst when they accidentally kill a man.

This was also the worst summer season at the box office in the last 25 years, according to the Los Angeles Times. The GLAAD report that one possible reason might be a lack of broader representation onscreen.

In May, another GLAAD report showed that of the 125 films released during 2016, only 23 included characters who were LGBTQ.
