Watch Janelle Monae's gorgeous denunciation of homophobia at the Golden Globes
Hidden Figures star Janelle Monae spoke out against hate speech, homophobia, and gospel singer Kim Burrell at the Golden Globes on Sunday.
Monae addressed the controversy that has surrounded Burrell’s comments during a backstage interview with the cast of Moonlight, a film she also stars in and one which centers on the sexuality of black men.
Last week, Kim Burrell, who appears on the Hidden Figures soundtrack, came under fire for some deeply homophobic statements she made in a sermon. Burrell called gay men and lesbians “perverted” and said that their sexual actions were “sins.”
Since then, Burrell has been uninvited from a scheduled appearance on Ellen, has seen her radio show canceled and has been told she will no longer be honored at the BMI Gospel Awards. Both Monae and Pharell, who collaborated with Burrell on the Hidden Figures soundtrack, denounced her comments.
