After #JeSuisCharlie, there's #JeSuisAhmed: a hashtag for slain French police officer

Wednesday’s attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo left 12 people dead, a majority of whom worked at the magazine. Soon after the assault, the hashtag #JeSuisCharlie began trending on Twitter as a way to stand in solidarity with the slain journalists. Many people also took to the streets in Paris to support those killed.

One of the victims who didn’t work at the magazine was French police officer Ahmed Merabet, who is believed to be Muslim, The Independent reported Thursday. Fusion has not independently verified Merabet’s religion.

And now #JeSuisAhmed is gaining traction on Twitter as a way to remember the police officer who died.

Anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant sentiment was already simmering throughout Europe before the attack on Charlie Hebdo — which has a history of challenging the Muslim faith and other religions — and experts are worried Wednesday’s assault could further inflame racial, ethnic, and religious tensions in France.
