Donald Trump's shameful birther event ended with a perfect metaphor for his candidacy
On Friday, Donald Trump held a campaign event to address his years-long embrace of birtherism, the discredited lie holding that Barack Obama was born outside of the United States and was thus an illegitimate American president.
The event was a catastrophe: It started an hour late, doubled as a tacky advertisement for Trump’s hilariously expensive new hotel, and featured several falsehoods about both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump’s role in the racist birther movement.

After finally admitting that Obama was born in America—all it took him was 5 years of phony “detective work”—Trump fled the podium and refused to take any questions from reporters, who had been told the event would be a press conference.
Fittingly, however, after Trump left the stage, a Perfect Metaphor occurred:
Here’s what it looked like:
“Donald Trump stage collapses, taking down some American flags” might be a little on-the-nose, but still…it’s beautiful. It’s beautiful.
