Here's how to spend $25,000 at F.A.O. Schwarz before it closes
Fire a 21-gun salute for the toy soldiers: Manhattan toy emporium F.A.O. Schwarz will close on July 15. The 153-year-old company has occupied the lobby of the General Motors Building on Fifth Avenue since 1986, but rising rent has forced its last remaining retail location to shut its doors. Toys “R” Us, which acquired the brand in 2009, hopes to reopen the store elsewhere in Midtown, but for now, its future remains uncertain.
We visited F.A.O. Schwarz last Thursday to find the three-floor institution still buzzing with tourists, and the line to play the famous floor piano as long as ever. Though the Muppet Whatnot Workshop has slashed the cost of its customizable puppets from $129 to $88.11, and we saw a lone shelf of discounted plush peacocks, F.A.O. Schwarz’s famously astronomical prices show no signs of reentering the Earth’s atmosphere.
Forty-two F.A.O. Schwarz products are pictured below, as spotted on the store’s shelves last week. Believe it or not, their prices combine for a staggering total of $26,820.63. On average, that works out to $639.
