Did you catch the 'South Park' reference on Drake's mixtape?

It’s been a week and a half since Drake dropped his mixtape, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. While the record has solid reviews, very few note some of his pop culture references directly.

While listening to the bass-heavy “6 Man,” we noticed a little South Park reference. In season 12 episode 4, “Canada on Strike,” Canada is literally going on strike so that the UN will give them more money. It’s filled with South Park’s absurdist Canadian stereotypes (flapping heads, beady eyes), but also the incredible kindness with which Canadians regard one another:


“I’m not your guy, friend.”
“I’m not your friend, buddy.”
“He’s not your buddy, guy.”

Are Canadians really that nice when they’re angry? Probably not, but back in 2008 the moment was so funny it was remixed shortly after on YouTube.

Many people forget this part of the episode because the character Butters makes an infamous YouTube video called, “What What in The Butt?”

But Drake didn’t forget.

In the second verse of “6 Man,” Drake — who hails from Canada — quips:
I mean, I’m back on this again, I’m here again
You know the truth, let’s not pretend
I’m not your friend, not your guy,
I’m not your buddy

A rapper with a sense of humor about where he comes from, be still our hearts.
