L.A. Metro riders can now charge their cell phones without fear of arrest

Thanks to a decree from Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Metro riders can now charge their cell phones from electrical outlets without fear of arrest.

Because apparently this was an issue before this Tuesday.

After receiving tips from locals, public radio station KPCC published a story about Metro police arresting and fining transit users for “stealing” electricity from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro). Meaning, they were trying to charge up while waiting for the train.

“The electrical plugs are for maintenance use only, not for the general public,” Metro spokesperson Paul Gonzales told KPCC. “It’s not free electricity.”

As a result, at least three people were arrested this year for charging their phones, he admitted.

Once the story came out, Garcetti (D) decided to put a stop to the arrests.

“This is simply common sense. I want our law enforcement resources directed toward serious crime, not cell phone charging,” Garcetti told KPCC.

Garcetti said that passengers should be free to charge their phones unless it interferes with Metro operations.
