Livestream: Eric Garner protests sweep New York City
No indictment. Again. A grand jury on Staten Island has declined to charge a white police officer in the July death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who was allegedly selling loose cigarettes outside the ferry terminal. The officer placed Garner in a chokehold, a move officially prohibited by the NYPD, in an incident that was captured on video. Garner could be heard repeatedly saying, “I can’t breathe.” The decision, coming so soon after the lack of indictment in the Michael Brown case, set off immediate protests.
