Fusion Poll: Young black and Hispanic voters most likely to believe Central American migrants fleeing violence back home

Nearly half of all likely millennial voters say the Democratic Party represents their views on immigration, compared to 30 percent whose views on the matter align with the Republican Party, according to a Fusion poll.

Millennial support for the Democrat’s position on immigration is even more pronounce among black and Hispanic likely voters, the poll found.

But when it comes to finger-pointing over the government’s failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform, there’s plenty of blame to go around.

Young Hispanic voters, however, are more likely than their white or black counterparts to blame congressional Republicans for Congress’ failure to pass immigration reform.

Young Hispanic voters are also more likely than their white and black peers to support the government’s allocation of more resources to address the situation of unaccompanied Central American children caught on the U.S. border.

Young voters’ views on the situation is split even more dramatically along partisan lines.

A similar partisan split in opinion in seen when young voters were asked their opinions about the motivation for Central American children to migrate to the U.S.

And young black and Hispanic voters are more likely than young white voters to think that Central American children are fleeing a legitimate fear of violence in their home countries.

Overall, most young voters appear to sympathize with the plight of unaccompanied Central American children and think they should be protected.

Curiously, when asked if a 2008 law should be overturned to allow the U.S. government to speed up the deportation of undocumented Central American migrants, the answers look a little different. Most young black voters and a plurality of millennial white and Hispanic voters say they support a bill that would hasten the deportation process.

The divide is even greater along political lines.
