Kerry Washington has a 'deep, deep love for sneakers'

While Marie Claire‘s April 2015 cover girl Kerry Washington makes designer duds look as comfortable as a pair of well-worn alumnus sweatpants, she confides to the magazine that her style acumen is hardly innate.

Comparing a fashion show to a “Degas opening at the Met or a performance of Swan Lake,” the Scandal star confesses she endured a grueling (self-mandated) crash course in fashion. “I just put myself in a boot camp of figuring it out—and realized that I really loved it.”  Her fashion reform school paid off, she proving her style dexterity throughout the accompanying spread in a myriad of Olivia Pope-approved tonal ensembles.

In fact, in behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot, Washington boasts “I have a deep, deep love for sneakers.” Apparently her collection is huge — almost rivaling her hubby, Nnamdi Asomugha’s, strong sneaker game. “It’s where my Bronx-ness shines bright!”

But perhaps the most illuminating detail throughout her Marie Claire spread is that the stunning star actually looks exactly like herself. Avoiding the skin-lightening flub of her March InStyle cover caused that I and the internet wrote on ad nasaem, Washington’s natural complexion simply glows and she appears confident amongst a tousle of curls.

My only caveat? Cloying fangirl and soon-to-be Scandal co-star Lena Dunham interviewed her for the story. At least, I approve of Dunham’s article headline: “Why We All Want to be Kerry Washington.” Never truer words.
