MAC Cosmetics just might develop Selena lipstick
As both a woman who can really only apply lipstick and a Texan who grew up “bidi bidi bom bom-ing” to Tejano jams, I am beyond thrilled at the news that MAC Cosmetics may be developing a limited edition collection in honor of the late mononymous superstar, Selena.
According to The Flama, the idea evolved into a phenomenon after one superfan/makeup artist, Jose Antonio Figueroa, got creative with Photoshop three months ago and posted a mock-up tube of lipstick in Selena’s signature rojo.

Employing the hashtag #SelenaQuintanillaforMAC, the idea simply took off, with other diehard Selena fans developing a Change.org petition in February urging MAC to consider developing a commemorative line to mark the music and beauty icon’s continued impact. Since its inception, the petition has garnered over 30,000 signatures, and will gain one more as soon as I finish writing this story.
MAC was so overwhelmed by the outpour of fan support they released an encouraging — if not somewhat vague — statement, saying,
“The loyalty and enthusiasm of Selena’s fans are clearly evident and we love this. M·A·C admires the passion and joy Selena brought to the world. She was an amazing person with amazing talent. We consider all types of feedback like this as we plan our collaborations.”
It’s not a ‘yes’, but it’s certainly not a ‘no.’
And as The Flama points out, Selena has such a built-in fanbase — one that will be descending upon her hometown of Corpus Christie this weekend to celebrate what would have been her 44th birthday — there is no way the collection wouldn’t fly out of stores.
While we wait for MAC to get their whole lives and get this collection off the ground, let’s celebrate Selena’s birthday by watching one of my favorite performances of hers.
Happy birthday, Selena!
