The Washington Redskins implored their fans to support the team’s name this afternoon by tweeting the hashtag #RedskinsPride. That was a not a good idea.
The hashtag campaign was an attempt to push back against Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has taken a strong stance against the Redskins’ name. Reid co-drafted a letter signed by 50 senators that urged the Redskins to change their name because it is a racist slur.
Redskins President and General Manager Bruce Allen responded to the senators’ letter saying, “our use of Redskins’ as the name of our football team for more than 80 years has always been respectful of and shown reverence toward the proud legacy and traditions of Native Americans.”
Apparently the Redskins’ PR team felt that wasn’t enough, hence the Twitter push.
But naturally, Twitter usurped the hashtag and pointed out the obvious: that this idea is worse than the team’s performance on the football field. Here’s how the hashtag crashed and burned … and somehow kept burning after it drove itself off a bridge and into a salt-water lake.
