WATCH: A Volcano Forms New Island South of Tokyo

A new island was formed this morning in seas about 620 miles south of Tokyo. Typical Thursday.

The new land mass is located near the Ogasawara chain, which is also known as the Bonin Islands, a series of 30 islands located on the seismically active Pacific Plate known as the “Ring of Fire.”

This footage, captured by the Japanese Coast Guard, shows the volcano exploding and forming an island land mass about 200 meters (about 600 feet) in diameter.


As the footage shows, there was significant black smoke, and the Japanese Coast Guard advised that there could be heavy smoke in the area for the remainder of the day. The agency also said the island could erode away or become a permanent land mass.

But, we’re not going to lie. It was way cooler when the Magic School Bus did it.
