Protesters in Oakland hold up mirrors to cops in support of Ferguson

Several hundred demonstrators marched through the streets of Oakland, Calif. on Wednesday evening taking a “reflective” approach to raising awareness about police brutality across the country. Instead of carrying handwritten placards, some Oaklanders brought mirrors and held them up to the police officers to show them what they looked like dressed in full riot gear.

Organizers of the protest said they were calling attention to five black men and one woman who were shot and killed recently by police. Among those honored by demonstrators were Jacorey Calhoun, 23, who was shot by Oakland Police officers on Aug. 3 and Michael Brown, who was killed in Ferguson a week later.

The protest was organized by a coalition of community groups in Oakland.

About 500 people gathered at downtown Oakland’s Ogawa Plaza, according to the Oakland Tribune.

Police reported that the march was entirely peaceful, with no arrests, injuries or acts of vandalism, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
