Which Singer Has the Greatest Vocal Range? It's Not Mariah

If there’s one thing Mariah Carey, the Elusive Chanteuse, is known for, it’s her vocal range*. Who hits a high note like Mimi?


That’s why it may come as a surprise that Mariah does not, in fact, top the list of the Vocal Ranges of the World’s Greatest Singers. That award goes to none other than Axl Rose.

A new interactive chart compiled by the good people at ConcertHotels.com compares the vocal ranges of today’s top artists with the greatest artists of all time. The chart shows the highest and lowest notes ever recorded in the studio according to each artist.

The list took data from the Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Singers of All Time from 2008. It also includes current artists from the list of nominees at the Billboard Music Awards 2014.

Apart from vocal range, the chart also ranks the singers according to highest note and lowest note. And it’s important to note that Mariah does, in fact, hit the highest note of all time, with Cristina Aguilera coming in second.

Axl Rose topped the lowest note chart, beating out the icon of deep-voiced crooning, Barry White.

Mariah has not issued a formal response to the news that she has the second-greatest vocal range ever. But if she did, it would probably look a lot like this:
