Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Funeral Must Be a Celebration

While this funeral dream was meaningful because it inspired Strange Pilgrims, Garcia Marquez admits that as a work of fiction, it fell flat.

The writer’s legacy as magical-realist storyteller and Latin American cultural cipher will live long beyond our lifetimes. We can only hope his funeral will, like he dreamed, be a festive celebration of his life.

But we should also hope his deep, sweet and sad insight on mortality—that “dying means never being with friends again”—was wrong.
